Group Classes

Now offering classes in three locations: Dog’s Retreat, 898 Troy Schenectady Road in Latham NY, Aqueduct Animal Hospital, 896 Riverview Road in Rexford NY, and Milton Manor, 612 Route 29 in Middle Grove NY. Each class will have a maximum of four dogs, and new classes begin soon. To sign up, or for more information, email

Group classes are appropriate for dogs who are comfortable around other dogs and people. Any dog who displays fearful or reactive behavior (for example lunging, growling, or excessive barking) towards other dogs or people would be better suited to private training sessions. If you’re not sure if group classes are a good fit for your dog, contact me and I’d be happy to discuss it with you.

Unless noted otherwise, classes meet once a week for six weeks, and cost $150.
There is a 10% discount for rescue dogs on their first class.

Proof of Distemper vaccine required for all classes. Proof of Rabies vaccine required for all classes except Puppy Manners. Proof of Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccine within the last nine months required for all classes at Aqueduct Animal Hospital, but recommended for everyone.

Puppy Manners

Get your puppy off to a good start with a foundation of basic obedience training. Additionally, this class is a good opportunity to socialize your puppy and get them some experience in a new environment. We will also discuss common puppy problems, such as housebreaking, nipping, chewing, and crate training.

* Puppies must be between eight weeks and five months old at the start of class, and must have received at least the first two shots in the distemper/parvo vaccine series.

Basic Manners 1

For dogs who have had little or no obedience training, this is the place to start. We will cover the basic skills your dog needs in order to become a well behaved member of your family: focus, sit, down, stay, come, leave it, and loose leash walking. Common behavior issues such as housebreaking, jumping, and inappropriate chewing will also be addressed.

Basic Manners 2

This class is for dogs who already have a foundation of obedience training. Picking up where Basic Manners 1/Puppy Manners left off, we will strengthen your dog’s skills by adding distractions and challenges to the behaviors he or she already knows. For example, we will work toward longer stays, farther recalls, and improved loose leash walking and heeling. We will also cover polite greetings for dogs and people, go to place, and reducing the use of food treats.

Canine Good Citizen

This class will prepare you and your dog for the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen test. This is a 10 item, non-competitive test to demonstrate that your dog is a well behaved member of the community. The first five weeks will be spent practicing the test items, and the test will be given the last week. During the test no food/treats may be used, and dogs may not wear corrective harnesses/collars or head halters.

Tricks and Games

A great way to have fun with your dog while reinforcing basic obedience training. This class will start with common tricks like shake and roll over, and will work up to more difficult tasks such as dogs weaving through their handler’s legs. Tricks are an enjoyable way to strengthen the relationship between dogs and their people, and can be a healthy outlet for energetic dogs who need lots of activity to stay out of trouble.

Picture Perfect

This is a fun, three week class to help you take better pictures of your dog. The first two weeks we will work on stays, a few tricks, and talk about using props. The last week we will put it all together and take photos of your dog.

*Dogs must have taken Puppy Manners/Basic Manners 1 or an equivalent prior to enrolling in this class. Picture Perfect is three weeks long and costs $75.
